The leadership role in today's ever-changing world of technology continues to be redefined. Leaders who might once have operated successfully with training in business administration must now display multi-faceted training. This new breed of leader must be able to manage and respond to high technology, and changing social needs on three levels: scientific, technological, and administrative. Business leaders who possess only a background in administration are typically trained in accounting and finance. They lack the technical knowledge needed to make informed decisions, especially in today's high-technology business environment.

Engineers, on the other hand, may possess technical knowledge but lack administrative and managerial skills. For many upward-mobile engineers and scientists, transition from specialists to managers might be the only way to avoid a career plateau and maintain opportunities for growth in their organizations. For some, starting technology-based companies of their own will be the ultimate challenge in personal development and self-fulfillment. In either case, as the rapid expansion of high technology continues, technical training becomes a necessity which, in turn, escalates the demand for managers with technical versatility. The new breed of leader must be well versed in current technical alternatives, and possess the managerial skills necessary to oversee enterprises and ensure their profitability. Such a leader is comfortable making decisions where engineering insight into development and production cycles is also an invaluable ingredient for success.
